This mask here is called a Persona. It is a symbol of loyalty to Master Wizeman.
~ Reala about one of the Persona Masks he is wearing.

The Persona Masks, also called Personas, are the magical masks introduced in NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams as an accessory that all first level Nightmarens wear to only symbolize their loyalty to their master, Wizeman the Wicked.

While Reala is seen with his Persona Mask on at all times, NiGHTS has taken off his/her mask to indicate defiance against Wizeman.

Reala

While it is not known if these Personas grant powers or they are quite simply cosmetic, both Reala and NiGHTS own a personal Persona they are intended to wear at all times. Reala's is always present but NiGHTS' shown only a few times.

Reala's Persona is gold with a "vine" like pattern and a pink jewel in the center, the edges are trimmed with black feathers. Three spikes poke up from above the jewel.

One Persona assumed to be NiGHTS' personal Persona is also gold but with a red gem in the center and two blue feathers sticking up in the center above the jewel, similar to the one worn by Reala. NiGHTS is seen in this Persona only a few times:

  • When showing off for Helen in the "World of Glass"; this is the only time NiGHTS puts it on voluntarily.
  • Placed on his/her face after being captured by Wizeman, in all endings.

Powers and Abilities[]

Certain Persona Masks can grant NiGHTS the powers to transform, giving him/her shapes beyond his/her natural shape-shifting abilities.

Dolphin Persona[]

Gained after each child's first Nightopia, this persona gives NiGHTS the ability to swim in the form of a dolphin.

Rocket Persona[]

Gained after the second Nightopia, this persona allows NiGHTS to blast off at full speed in the form of a rocket. This is also effective during the second fight with Cerberus to reach the middle head quickly.

Dragon Persona[]

Gained after the third Nightopia, it allows NiGHTS to resist wind and keeps him/her from floating down when idle as a long-bodied dragon.

Trivia[]

  • The name of the Persona Masks comes from the word "persona which is also called "personae"".
  • The design of the Personas are based on Venetian masks (also called Carnival masks) used in not only masquerade balls, carnivals and Halloween parties, but also in the celebratory festivities of both the Carnival of Venice and Mardi Gras.
  • In the early 2007, there were rumors that NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams would be ported to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 or that a new game titled "NiGHTS - Twilight Adventure" would be developed for the mentioned consoles. The game would feature three exclusive masks called "Cloud", "Eagle" and "Magnet". However, the rumor came during the beginning of Journey of Dreams development and more news about it never came, meaning that this was either a false rumor or that the idea was disproved.
  • The gems on both NiGHTS' and Reala's respective Personas look very similar to their respective gems on their chests.
  • Ever since NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, Reala has never appeared without his Persona mask, with the only exception being in games where he appears in his NiGHTS into Dreams design.
    • However, by hacking the Journey of Dreams game files, it's possible to find a model of Reala without his Persona.
    • NiGHTS on the other hand, has only ever appeared with their persona in Journey of Dreams.
  • The Personas/Persona Masks themselves were inspired by the "Persona Archetype" from famous psychologist Dr. Carl Jung's works based on human subconsciousness.
